Speaking of monarchs, the milkweed (asclepias incarnata)is about 2 feet high and has small green rosettes which will eventually become pink flowers like the one in the picture. I pinched off the rosettes on one of the plants to see if it would produce more and lengthen the season of flowering. The monarchs here don't lay eggs on my milkweed until August! My soil has a lot of clay and I think the milkweed would be happier in a sandy soil (and with more sun).
